Paramount Chief of Prang Deskins Alhaji Mawia as Sariki Zongo

Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, the Paramount Chief of Prang Traditional Area, in consultation with his elders and the Prang Traditional Council, has officially deskinned Alhaji Mawia from his position as Sariki Zongo of Prang, effective August 9, 2026. The decision comes after extensive deliberations and follows what the council describes as a pattern of conduct unbecoming of the traditional role.

His Royal Majesty stated that the action was necessitated by Alhaji Mawia's behaviour, which he described as disrespectful, divisive, and contrary to the established customs and traditions of the Prang Traditional Area. The council expressed serious concerns about the former Sariki Zongo's actions, which they believe threatened the unity and stability of the traditional institution.

Among the allegations levelled against Alhaji Mawia are false claims to the title of "Sariki Prang" and attempts to forge endorsement documents from all 17 tribal Zongo chiefs and the Paramount Chief himself. His Royal Majesty Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III clarified that he never endorsed Alhaji Mawia as "Sariki Zongo" or "Sariki Hausawa," dismissing the claims as fraudulent.

The Traditional Council further accused Alhaji Mawia of deception regarding the supervision of Zongo tribal chiefs. He allegedly convinced the council to place all Prang Zongo tribal chiefs under his supervision, claiming it would help them serve the area better and speak with one voice. However, the council later discovered that this request was made with what Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III described as a "bad mindset."

When the District Security Council (DISEC), led by District Chief Executive Hon Samuel Agyapong, attempted to mediate, the Prang Traditional Council instructed Alhaji Mawia to personally offer an apology in accordance with customary rites. The Paramount Chief expressed uncertainty about whether he had sanctioned any prior apology. However, instead of complying, Alhaji Mawia sent a letter refusing to meet Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III at the palace, demanding instead that all meetings be held at the Pru West District Chief Executive's office.

The council also raised concerns about suspicious requests for traditional items. According to His Royal Majesty, over three consecutive years, Alhaji Mawia requested a cow from the Paramount Chief for sacrifice to God. In the fourth year, he escalated his request to include a black cow, gold, black and red ropes, and cowries. When the Paramount Chief demanded that Alhaji Mawia appear before the Traditional Council to explain the purpose of these items, he failed to do so, raising serious questions about his intentions.

Speaking to Ghana Districts, the Kyidom Hene of Prang Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Abufi II, confirmed the deskinment on behalf of the Divisional Chiefs. He revealed that Alhaji Mawia had also demonstrated gross disrespect by refusing to remove his hat as a sign of respect to the Omanhene when instructed by the elders. Instead, he walked out with his followers, further compounding his disregard for traditional authority.

In a final declaration, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, exercising the powers vested in him, formally deskinned Alhaji Mawia as Sariki Zongo of Prang. He ordered all Prang Zongo tribes to immediately replace him. Nana Kwame Abufi II emphasised that based on the reasons outlined, Alhaji Mawia is no longer recognised as Sariki Zongo of Prang, and the council expects all stakeholders to respect the traditional authority's decision.
