Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr. Shaib, who also serves as the Second Deputy Minority Whip, said the initiative—dubbed “Backing Stock”—was developed in collaboration with constituency executives to redefine the kind of support provided to candidates.

He explained that preparations for the exercise began before December last year, during which shoe sizes were collected from schools with the assistance of teachers, before engaging a local manufacturer.

“This is to encourage them and let them know we value their hard work as they prepare to qualify for SHS and beyond,” he said.

Mr. Shaib further disclosed that the sandal donation marks only the first phase of the initiative.

He announced the introduction of an “MP’s Freshers’ Fund,” under which successful candidates will receive trunks, mattresses, school bags, and financial assistance to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians as students transition to senior high school.

“We are doing all of this to support families so that the burden normally placed on parents will be reduced,” he added.

The 2026 BECE is scheduled to take place from Monday, May 4 to Monday, May 11, 2026.

More than 600,000 candidates are expected to sit for the examination, which serves as the final assessment for Junior High School students and is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for both school and private candidates.
