The project was formally handed over to the contractor during a ceremony led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, and the Urban Roads Director for Kumasi, Engineer Atta Poku. The event, attended by senior KMA officials, marks the start of work at identified areas, including Santasi Anyinam and Kokosu.
The initiative addresses long-standing concerns over pedestrian safety, particularly along busy highways where foot traffic conflicts with vehicular movement. The selected sites are known for high volumes of pedestrians movement.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mayor Agyemang emphasized the project’s alignment with the assembly’s commitment to sustainable urban development and citizen welfare. “The safety of our residents is paramount. These footbridges are not just concrete structures; they are vital infrastructure that will save lives, reduce traffic disruptions, and ensure a smoother flow for everyone,” he stated.
Engineer Atta Poku outlined the technical scope of the project, confirming that the designs prioritize durability, accessibility, and user convenience. He assured the public that construction would be conducted with minimal disruption to existing traffic patterns.
Upon completion, the footbridges are expected to provide a safe, convenient, and reliable means for thousands of daily pedestrians, including schoolchildren and traders, to navigate these busy corridors. The project is widely anticipated to drastically reduce pedestrian-vehicle collisions and enhance overall mobility within Ghana’s second-largest city.
Residents and commuters in the affected areas have expressed relief and optimism about the development, which they hope will bring an end to the perilous daily dash across speeding traffic.
