DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS

Population

The population of the District according to 2000 populations and Housing Census is 93,477, which is made up of 46.9% (93,843) male and 53.1% (49,634) female. About 96.3% of the total population is resident. The District share of the total Regional Population is 5.7%.

Sex Composition


The sex ratio of male to female isl: 1.2. 79% (88,373,860) of the population lives in the rural areas while 21%(19,617) lives at the urban area.


Population Growth Rate


Between 1984 and 2000 the district recorded about 2.5% population growth, which higher than the regional growth rate of 1.8%, but at par with that of the national growth rate.

Migration

A remarkable number of migrations from external origin. The causational factors are both push and pull. The rate of immigration is more than emigration. The usual immigration rate is 2.98% of the total population.

The migrants originate from the surrounding districts mainly for commercial purposes. This implies that there is the need for expansion of accommodation facilities and other social amenities at a higher rate in the district to contain new migrants.
