Water
Generally, access to potable water in the district is very low since most of the communities rely on water from the streams and rivers. Some of the households also rely on few hand-dug wells constructed by these households. The few boreholes which were constructed some years ago have experienced several break downs.
As a result, most of the communities resort to the rivers and the streams as their only source of drinking water. Jema, the District Capital experiences acute water problems since there is no single functional borehole in the township. The table below presents a survey data on the proportions of the population that depend on the various sources of water for their water needs.
From the table, it can be seen that, a great number of the people, accounting for 44.6% of the population depend on unsafe river sources for their water needs.
Sanitation
Sanitation is generally a problem in the district. It is not uncommon to find bushes well-grown right in the hearts of some of the communities in the district. The communities are associated with poor environmental conditions such as poor drainage, erosion, unkempt surroundings, indescrimate waste disposal, and inadequate places of convenience.
