SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Transportation

Road transport is the most important means of transport in the district. The conditions of most of the roads are bad; some are unmotorable during the rainy season.  For example, Chirehin-Dumso, Amoma Junction to Amoma roads, and some portions of Beposo-Nkoranza road.

Only 18km of the road network had been tarred (i.e. Kintampo-Techiman road), the rest are untarred and most often unmotorable. Currently, the transport organisations operating in the district are the GPRTU and the Metro Mass Transport Company.

Markets

The district has three (3) weekly markets located in Jema (Tuesday), Apesika (Thursday) and Anyima (Monday). These markets are patronised mainly by farmers and middlemen from Kintampo, Techiman, Tamale, Wenchi and other areas. Products sold at the markets are mainly food crops and household items. The market centers are made up of weak temporal structures with small spaces and lack adequate parking and delivery bays.

Post and Telecommunication

The district has only one Post Office located at Jema, the district capital. The main function of this facility is the delivery of letters. The district has telephone facilities in the capital Jema through the Ghana Telecom Radio Phones. Again, the mobile cellular systems of Ghana Telecom (ONE TOUCH) and TIGO are in operation.

The cellular network of Scancom Ghana Ltd. (areeba) is still being installed.  The level of communication facilities in the district is inadequate especially with respect to fixed telecommunication lines and needs immediate intervention. The establishment of such facilities in the other parts of the district to speed up communication flow is critical.

Road Network

The district can boast of only 18km of tarred road (i.e. Kintampo-Techiman road) all the remaining are gravel surfaced feeder roads. The total road network of feeder roads in the district is 385.44 km. Out of the total length of 385.44 km only 135.59 km is accessible all year round representing 35.2% whilst the remaining 249.85 km i.e. 64.8% are not accessible.

More access roads need to be constructed in most of the communities and in the Township to facilitate free vehicular movement and to ease congestion, especially in Jema town.  In addition, survey and construction of access roads to newly developed residential areas, need to be sped up.

Transport

Road transport is the most common form of transport in Ghana and for that matter the district. The Techiman – Kintampo trunk road which is part of the Trans-Ecowas route passes through the entire length of the District linking Jema, the District capital to a few communities like Pramposo, Pamdu, Peninamisa and Nante. The rest of the District is networked with feeder roads.

These roads serve settlements located away from the trunk road. The travel patterns and characteristics in the District are, to a large extent, influenced by the primary occupation of the rural dwellers, the location and distribution of basic infrastructural services within the immediate environs of their settlements. The commonest means of transport in the District are the ‘Tico’ taxis and urvan minibus for passengers. Tractors and trucks are mainly used  to cart food staffs from farm to house and market centres.
