WATER AND SANITATION

Water

Water needs in the municipality will mainly be based on the use of potable water which consists of pipe borne water, boreholes and mechanized wells. Currently, the entire Goaso and Ayomso communities are served with pipe borne water from the Small Town Water Supply Project. The primary source of water for the treatment plant is the River Goa which flows through the municipality. This plant is expected to continuously serve Goaso and Ayomso Township over the planned period.

The rest of the settlements in the municipality are served from boreholes and wells. Currently, out of the 196 boreholes in the Municipality, only 70 boreholes are functional in addition to one mechanized borehole. Currently  work on the Construction of  Small Town Water Supply System are at their advance stages of Completion  at Akrodie and Mim which is expected to supply water to about 50,000 people in the two communities

There is also a good number of wells (1,557), comprising of both individual and communal facilities. Most of these wells could be mechanized in order to make them potable and appropriate alternative water source for the populace. Due to the erratic nature of

Sanitation

In estimating the refuse disposal facility need, the populations of the urban centres of Goaso and Mim were selected and an average waste generation capacity of a person as 0.5kg determined.

The waste generation capacity of Goaso and Mim (2006-2009)

Currently, there are 2 skips but none can be found in Mim, there is therefore the need to provide additional skips which can accommodate an increase in waste generation over the planned period. However, Mim has none of the skips and would require 3 of the 20 cubic metre capacity skips.

Environmental Situation

Sanitation and Waste Management

Waste management in the Asunafo North Municipal is far from being desirable. The disposal of both solid and liquid waste, including human excreta, storm water and household refuse are poorly carried out in the Municipality. Though some households bury or burn their refuse, majority use the open surface system for their waste disposal.

It is a general practice for people in most communities to defecate in the bush (free range), mainly due to lack of access to convenient toilet facilities .Where toilet facilities are provided either by households or the MA, there is a problem of timely and regular disposal of human excreta due to the absence of a septic emptier and a permanent disposal site in the municipality.

Most communities do not also have any proper drainage system. The inadequacy of proper household drains has led to the accumulation of stagnant water with offensive smells in and around residential areas.  Drains are choked with filth giving rise to mosquito breeding especially during the rainy season.
