President cut sod for ‘Big Push’ roads project in Bono Region

H.E President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of roads under the ‘Big Push’ project in the Bono Region to improving access roads network and quality as improve transportation, healthcare, agriculture, and trade.

This initiative aims to transform Ghana's economy through extensive road and infrastructure development, focusing on fairness and equity to ensure regional development.

Addressing a colourful durbar of chiefs and people of the Bono Region, President John Mahama said the 'Big Push' as a flagship programme was designed to aggressively address Ghana's road deficit. He noted that his government has allocated US$2 billion annually for the next five years, bringing the total investment in the road sector to US$10 billion.

He assured the chiefs and the people of Bono that funding had been secured for the Big Push project and contractors will not encounter financial difficulties when it comes to payment. He added that once work meets standards and certificates are issued, payments will be made promptly.

On quality of the work, President John Mahama assured the people that the contractors will ensure quality and standards.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza at the ceremony noted that government has released GH¢6 billion to settle arrears owed to contractors, including those who worked under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

He described the move as historic, ‘single largest’ payment to contractors in the country. He noted government was financing these new projects entirely through internal funding, without external borrowing. “This project is the largest on the continent, funded solely by a country's own resources”, Mr. Agbodza stated.

On quality of work, Mr. Agbodza noted that all construction materials would undergo rigorous testing and no contractor will be able to deliver substandard work and expect payment. He urged the contractors to work within timelines while prioritizing quality.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Dormaahene and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, commended the government for the intervention, to bring relief to the people for the long-standing deterioration of roads in the region.

He expressed optimism the initiative will improve road networks for the benefit of the people as work on the five designated roads in the Bono Region were expected to commence immediately, with further infrastructure projects outlined for 2026.

Some of the key roads included in the project Sunyani Inner and Outer Ring Roads, Berekum-Sampa Road, Techiman-Wenchi-Wa Road.

The ceremony was in fulfillment of key 2024 election promise to revamp the nation's road infrastructure and enhance inter-city connectivity and improve overall economic growth.
