Agona West MCE revives monthly cleanup, urges vigilance against filth

The Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Eric Gyamfi Odoom, has renewed his call for residents to maintain clean surroundings to prevent outbreaks of communicable diseases. The appeal came during the revival of a mandatory monthly cleanup exercise across the municipality.

Following a five-hour community cleanup, Mr. Odoom addressed a gathering of municipal staff, security personnel, market traders, and environmental health officers. He framed the initiative as a critical component of President Mahama’s vision for a cleaner Ghana, emphasizing that sustained cleanliness would directly reduce the burden of preventable diseases and lower healthcare costs for citizens.

Crackdown on Indiscriminate Dumping

The MCE issued a strong warning against the practice of sweeping homes and businesses only to dump waste onto streets and into gutters. He condemned this habit as a major challenge for the Assembly and a serious public health hazard.

To bolster the efforts, the municipality has committed to procuring additional cleaning equipment, including wheelbarrows, shovels, and waste racks, for distribution in Swedru.

Mr. Odoom commended the strong turnout from security agencies, the Swedruman Council of Chiefs, and community groups, expressing confidence that collective action would ensure a cleaner, healthier future.

Echoing the MCE’s stance, Nana Kweku Esieni V, Regent of Agona Swedru, issued a direct warning to shop owners who neglect their civic duty.

He stated that those who refuse to participate in future exercises will face severe penalties from the Swedruman Council, as was enforced last month.

The Regent pledged the council’s continued collaboration with the Assembly to make Agona West the cleanest municipality in the Central Region.
