According to Mr Patrick Acheampong, the 2025 Bono East Regional Best Farmer, farmers across the region were increasingly cultivating pepper, tomatoes and garden eggs in commercial quantities.

Speaking during a visit to his farm at Tanoso in the Techiman Municipality, Mr Acheampong said vegetable farming had become increasingly lucrative due to the strong demand for vegetables on markets across the region.

He explained that the surge in market demand had encouraged many farmers to reduce their cultivation of staple crops and devote large acres of land to vegetable production.

“In fact, many farmers who left vegetable production have returned seriously, looking for land to engage in the cultivation of vegetables in commercial quantities,” Mr Acheampong stated.

He, however, expressed concern that the trend could negatively affect maize and yam production in the region if not properly managed.

Mr Acheampong said the prices of tomatoes and pepper had also increased significantly, making vegetable farming more attractive to farmers.

He noted that a box of tomatoes, which previously sold for about GH¢4,000, was now selling at GH¢5,000, while a bag of pepper had increased from GH¢6,000 to GH¢9,000.

He therefore called on the government and relevant stakeholders to support farmers with farm inputs, improved seedlings and fertilisers to enhance vegetable production while ensuring a balance with the cultivation of staple crops.
