The exercise focused on desilting drains, collecting refuse, and enhancing overall sanitation. Market women, youth groups, and community members temporarily closed their shops to actively participate, while unemployed drug addicts, popularly known as “junkies”, also turned out in large numbers to support the initiative.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Freeman Tsekpo, who had been on the grounds since Saturday, January 18, commended participants for their dedication and commitment to ridding the municipality of filth. He noted that staff, management, Assembly Members, youth groups, and residents had worked tirelessly throughout the week to improve the aesthetic appeal of the city.

Addressing market women at the proposed 24-hour Economy Market, Hon. Tsekpo dismissed speculations that traders would lose their sheds to affluent business owners. He assured them that no trader would be displaced, emphasizing that the new ultra-modern market would accommodate all traders, including small-scale vendors such as 'momoni' and pepper sellers. According to him, the project is intended to improve sanitary conditions and modernize trading activities.

The MCE also cautioned residents against slabbing drains without approval, noting that indiscriminate slabbing has contributed significantly to choked drains in the municipality. He urged residents to obtain permits from the Assembly before undertaking such activities.

Additionally, he called on property owners who have not regularized their permits to take advantage of a six-month grace period offering a 50 percent discount. He explained that permit fees would revert to their original rates after the deadline and encouraged compliance to support orderly development.

The Member of Parliament for the Municipality, Hon. Dr. Ernest Norgbey, who also participated in the exercise, called for attitudinal and behavioral change towards environmental sanitation. He expressed appreciation to the market women and all participants for their involvement.

The market women, in turn, thanked the Assembly for the initiative and appealed for regular desilting of drains and fair treatment from city guards.
