ERCC marks Green Ghana Day at Effiduase

The Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in partnership with Ghana Forestry Commission has launched the Regional Green Ghana Day at Effiduase Highway Training Center.

The theme for this year’s program was dubbed ‘Growing A Greener Tomorrow’ where thousands of seedlings were planted to mark the occasion and help promote afforestation.

The Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, in a speech stated that the most critical aspect of afforestation effort was not just about planting but rather, the survival of the seedlings planted.

He explained that the theme for this year’s celebration emphasized the enormous responsibility bestowed on each and every one to ensure that the future generation inherited a richer, better wildlife to replace the current deploring state of our forests.

The Hon. Regional Minister mentioned that the current change in our environment is as a result of human activities undertaken in our forests and water bodies. These include illegal mining, deforestation, and bad farming practices as well as bush burning, etc.

The Green Ghana Day was introduced as part of an aggressive national afforestation and reforestation program by the Government to recover, and to contribute to climate restoration globally.

Eastern Regional Manager of the Forestry Services Division of Ghana Mr. Isaac Noble Eshun, explained that his division was targeting to plant about 700,000 tree seedlings across the Region.

According to him, several tree species including Cassia, Odum, Sour sop, Coconut, Ofram, Mango, Mahogany and Ceiba has been given out to forestry officers for distribution to individuals, Churches, Mosques and various Institutions and Organizations.

The offices include, Donkorkrom, Begoro, Kyebi, Kade, Somanya and Akim Oda. Mr. Eshun urged all to assist in the planting of trees since it’s crucial in every aspect of human life.

He said trees contribute to the environment by providing us with oxygen, improving air quality, improving the climate conserving water, preserving the soil. Supporting wildlife is another way of practicing afforestation and reforestation to improve the quality and longevity of our lives.

At the launch, approximately 300 seedlings were planted by participants at the Roads and Highways training School at Effiduase in the New Juaben North Municipality.
