This follows the drowning of eight pupils while crossing the Sene River from Atigagorme to attend school at Wayokope. The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic after visiting Atigagome last Friday to express his condolence to the bereaved families.

He assured the families of the continuous support of the GES to ensure they were safe and secure. As part of the visit, Dr Nkansah donated 100 life jackets and learning materials to the community as an interim safety and security measure for the schoolchildren.

On January 24 this year, eight of 20 school children on their way from Atigagorme to school at Wayokope drowned when the boat they were travelling in capsised.

Addressing challenges

Dr Nkansah said the community had made available a piece of land for the construction of the school block, and pledged that work would commence within the shortest possible time.

He told the bereaved families that “we are deeply saddened by the occurrence, and as leaders, it is our duty to ensure that such bad news never befalls our children again. “To address the challenge, the government is constructing a school here in Atigagorme within the shortest possible time.

“As we wait for the completion of the school, I plead with all parents and teachers to ensure that our children wear the life jackets we have donated today,” Dr Nkansah.

To address the challenge of inadequate teachers in the island community, the Director-General disclosed that he was in talks with the district assembly to recruit and post some teachers to the community.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, the Okyeame of Nkomi Traditional Area, Okyeame Kofi Amponi, praised the Director-General for his pragmatic leadership through the visit and donation to the community.

Appreciation

The Assembly Member of Old Nkomi Electoral Area, Nathan Baflo, who received the items on behalf of the community, commended the GES for the gesture.

“We are grateful to the GES for the proactive measures they have taken since the incident occurred. Indeed, the lack of life jackets for the schoolchildren has been a major challenge, and I am happy that we have received these new 100 jackets today.

The Chief Executive of the Sene East District Assembly, Kofi Gyimah, applauded the GES Director-General for being a man of his words and donating the life jackets to check the possibility of drowning in the island community.
