Kintampo South Inaugurates District Education Oversight Committee with Capacity Building Workshop
The Kintampo South District Assembly has held a one-day capacity-building workshop to formally inaugurate its District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) and equip members with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

The committee, established under Ghana's Pre-Tertiary Education Act, 2020 (Act 1049), is tasked with overseeing education activities within the district, promoting accountability, transparency, and quality education delivery.
Legal Framework and Mandate
Mr. Kwasi Opoku, the District Education Director and Secretary to the committee, explained that the DEOC serves as a vital link between schools, communities, local authorities, and education agencies. He noted that the formation of the committee is backed by law, with Section 33 of Act 1049 mandating every district assembly to constitute such an oversight body, replacing the earlier Education Act, 2008 (Act 778).
Committee Composition
The DEOC comprises representatives from various stakeholder groups, including:
• Health and social welfare sectors
• Female representation
• Traditional authorities
• Religious bodies
• Teacher associations
• Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) representatives
• School Management Committees (SMCs)

The District Chief Executive (DCE) serves as chairperson, with the Education Director acting as secretary.
Key Functions and Responsibilities
According to Section 34 of Act 1049, the committee's mandate includes:
• Overseeing school infrastructure and facilities
• Monitoring teacher availability, punctuality, and attendance
• Evaluating staff performance and discipline
• Supervising the supply of textbooks and teaching-learning materials
• Ensuring compliance with educational policies
Strategies for Effective Operation
The workshop also addressed strategies for effective DEOC operation, including:
• Regular training for committee members
• Strengthening collaboration among stakeholders
• Ensuring adequate funding and logistics support

In a brief address, Mr. Wilfreed Zuuri, the District Chief Executive for Kintampo South, expressed gratitude to members for accepting their roles in this important committee.
"I ask all members to remain focused on their various roles and responsibilities and always be ready to work when duty calls," he stated.
He emphasized that a member loses their status if absent from three consecutive meetings and urged continuous support for education improvement in the district.
Reading Improvement Initiatives
The workshop also featured discussions on improving reading abilities in schools, with members contributing suggestions and views on tackling reading challenges among pupils.
