President Mahama Announces New Maternity Block for Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the construction of a new Maternity Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) as part of efforts to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare delivery in Ghana.

The President made the announcement during the commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the hospital.

He disclosed that the project is currently at the procurement stage and will involve the replacement of the aging Guggisberg Building, which has served as the hospital's maternity facility for decades. According to President Mahama, the deteriorating state of the building no longer provides the safe, comfortable, and dignified environment that expectant mothers deserve.

The new maternity block is expected to provide modern infrastructure and improved facilities to support quality maternal and newborn care at Ghana's premier referral hospital. President Mahama stressed the importance of ensuring that women have access to well-equipped healthcare facilities where they can deliver safely and receive quality medical attention.

He noted that the project forms part of the government's broader agenda to modernise healthcare infrastructure nationwide, adding that improving health outcomes requires not only skilled healthcare professionals but also state-of-the-art facilities that enable them to deliver quality care.

President Mahama further stated that the success of the new maternity block would be measured by the lives saved, the families supported, and the improved healthcare experiences of mothers and newborns who will benefit from the facility.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to investing in quality healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that every Ghanaian woman has access to safe, dignified, and modern maternal healthcare services.
