Salaga Youth demands release of their colleagues, besiege police station

Reporting reaching Ghanadistricts,com has it that the youth of Salaga in the newly created Savanna Region numbering about five hundred have besieged the premises of the Salaga Police Station leading to uneasy calm in the area.

They are demanding the release of some alleged youth, they claimed were minors that were arrested in connection with yesterday’s violence that led to the burning of the ruling new Patriotic Party Office following the announcement of Damango as the regional capital for the Savanna Region.

The respects are reported to have been transported to Tamale to assist the police in further investigation but the youth would not take any of that and are calling for immediate release of their colleagues.

The situation, Ghanadistricts.com understand is degenerating as some of them have resorted to throwing stones at personnel at the police station.

The Youth have also dragged the Party Chairman of the new patriotic party to the police station to assist in the release of those arrested; while the party chairman of the leading opposition party, the National Democratic Congress and other party executives from both political parties are assisting to bring calm to the Salaga Township.

Meanwhile, the military have been called to beef up security and ensure further escalation of the violence.

CAUSE OF VIOLENCE

Following the announcement of Damongo as the capital for the newly-created Savannah Region on Tuesday by the President Nana Akufo-Addo, the youth of Salaga felt betrayed and vent their anger on NPP party executives and structures to register their displeasure with the decision.

The president made the disclosure when he presented Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 116 for the creation of the Savannah Region at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, 12 February 2019.

Prior to this announcement, the youth have lobbied for Salaga to be made the regional capital ahead of Damango.

The youth argued that they worked hard for the NPP party in the 2016 general elections giving the party its only seat in the Savanna region.
