The socio-economic development of any people is largely effected by their educational system and the facilities available. The Sekyere East District has a number of educational facilities but are only concentrated in the south-western portion of the district to the disadvantage of the north-eastern (Afram Plains) portion.

Basic School Level

The district has 108 pre-schools, 129 Primary Schools and 65 Junior Secondary Schools. (See table 1.30)

From 2001 up to 2005 enrollment at the pre-school level increased by 33 percent, Primary School 16 percent, and the JSS level 14 percent. The overall increase in basic school enrollment from 2001 to 2005 was 19 percent. It may be observed that over the years enrollment, particularly in the Pre-school level, keeps on increasing.

This may be due to the capitation grant and the government policy on Education, FCUBE. The annual average increase in enrolment for Pre-school was 6.6 percent, Primary School 3.2 percent and JSS 2.8 percent.

K.G Gross Enrollment Rate

Looking at the male - female population aged 4 - 5, in the district who is actually in school, it can be found that the male - female gross enrolment increased from 49.5 percent in 2003 to 70.0 percent in 2005 (See table 1.31).

It may be observed that from 2003 up to 2005, the female gross enrolment rate is higher than that of the male gross enrolment rate. This is due partly to the girl-child education sponsorship package for girls pursued by the Assembly over the years.

Primary School Gross Enrollment Rate

At the primary school level, the gross enrolment rate for the male increased from 54.1 percent in 2003 to 93.0 percent in 2005, while that of the female increased from 54.7 percent in 2003 to 64.5 percent in 2005. (See table 1.232). For both male and female the increase in gross enrolment is more than 50 percent and this is quite encouraging.

JSS Gross Enrolment Rate

At the JSS level, it was observed that the gross enrollment rate aged 12-14 years in school increased from 51.9 percent in 2003 to 91.7 percent in 2005. In the case of the females, the gross enrollment rate increased from 50.4 percent in 2003 to 53.9 percent in 2005 (see table 1.33). In both cases it was observed that the gross enrollment rates for males and females were above 50 percent.

It may be observed that whereas at the KG level, the gross enrolment rate was higher than that of the male, the same cannot be said for the female gross enrollment rate at the Primary and JSS levels. At both Primary and JSS level, the male gross enrolment rates are higher than that of the female. The implication is that at the Primary and JSS levels, the boys outnumber the girls and the drop-out rate among girls become higher.

Senior Secondary School Level

The district has four Senior Secondary Schools. These are Tweneboa Kodua Secondary School, Effiduase Secondary/Commercial School, Asokofe T.I. Ahamadiyya Secondary School and Dadease Agricultural Secondary School. Between 2003 and 2005, the total enrolment in these schools increased from 3045 to 3780.

Educational Performance

The performance of pupils at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has improved tremendously from 2000 to 2005. For example, in 2000, out of a total number of 839 candidates presented for the BECE, 586 representing 70 percent passed. Also in 2005, out of 917 candidates who sat for the BECE, 864, representing 94 percent passed. This is quite an impressive performance (see table 1.34).

Breaking down the performance of the pupils at BECE into males and females, it is observed that more males (boys) passed than their females (girls) counterparts between 2000 and 2005 (See table 1.35)

The percentage of boys passing the BECE has increased remarkably from 41.7 percent in 2001 to 56.0 percent in 2005. Also the percentage of girls passing the BECE is increasing and encouraging. From 2002 the percentage of girls passing has improved from 24.3 percent to 38.2 percent, with an average annual increase of 3.5 percent.

There is room for improvement in the performance of both boys and girls at the BECE. It is hoped that the performance of the girls would improve more with the girl-child education sponsorship package from the Assembly.
