HEALTH SECTOR

The Municipality has one hospital located at Nalerigu.  There are seven health centres and four health posts in the district. The Baptist Medical centre, managed by the Baptist Mission, is equipped with modern facilities. The centre serves as the District Hospital and is one of the two health facilities owned by churches. The other one Christian Health Association of Ghana health institutions is the Langbinsi Health centres owned by the Presbyterian Church.

Health centres are located at Gbintiri,Wundua and Sakogu.Generally shortage of qualified personnel pose a problem.  Another problem with health delivery is physical access.  There are no private Clinics in the district, 15 chemical shops, one hundred and thirty one trained traditional birth attendants and sixty untrained TBAs.  Community based surveillance volunteers in the district are one hundred and twenty nine.

Malaria remains by far the highest OPD reported disease. The ten top diseases are Diarrhoea diseases, VRT, Intestinal worms, Diseases of the skin, Gynaecological disorder, pregnancy and related complications, pneumonia, anaemia, and rheumatism.  Malnutrition is quite high among the pre-school children in the District. Guinea worm is not major water related disease in the District.  The few cases that occur affected people from communities outside the district. There is higher than normal incidence of spinal meningitis and hookworm.

HIV AIDS

The HIV/AIDS Pandemic in the District has been alarming 18% of all AIDS cases reported in the District Health Institutions since 2004 affected people within the District.  The trend is on the increase and females outnumber the male.  Most of the cases came mainly from the urban centres Nalerigu, Nagboo, Gambaga, Langbinsi and Sakogu.  However, isolated cases also came from Gbintiri and Gbandaa.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) Personnel, the District AIDS committee, CBOs and NGOs have been carrying out activities to check the spread of the disease and stigmatisation of people living with AIDS. Various methods and IEC Strategies like Discussions, Video Shows, lectures, role-plays interviews, and quiz are adopted. Most of the activities target the Youth aged 16 to 40 years. AIDS programmes and education also takes place at video shows, schools, Churches/Mosques, Bars, funerals and Market places. Founds are sourced from the Ghana AIDS Commission, GET FUND and from NGOs for IEC campaigns on AIDS.  There is still much more to do on IEC to reduce the stigmatisation of the pandemic. There are currently no programmes for people living with HIV/AIDS.  Since reported cases are mostly from the urban areas, activities should be intensified in these areas.  Rural communities should however not be neglected in IEC activities and other AIDS Programmes.

Population

The District population advisory committee has identified fertility regulation as one of the major problem of population management and the root causes of poverty in the district. Each year work plan to carry out a major District campaign on family planning and reproductive health issues will be prepared and implemented with the objective of regulating population. This will be done with the active Involvement of all stakeholders

Health Insurance Schemes

The District Health Insurance Scheme is currently being operated in the District. About 7,000 people have so far benefited from the scheme. The main problem of the on-going programme is lack of transport, weak financial base, and the low enrolment drive in the District.
