HOPin Academy Delivers Lifeline Sanitation Facilities to Kumbungu Community

HOPin Academy has handed over modern toilet facilities to the Kumbungu Health Centre, Kumbungu Senior High School, and market traders in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region as part of efforts to improve sanitation and curb open defecation in the area.

The sanitation project, funded by the Grundfos Foundation, includes hygienic toilet units fitted with handwashing stations, polytanks, and safe water points. The intervention is expected to improve sanitary conditions and enhance health outcomes for patients, healthcare workers, students, pregnant and breastfeeding women, traders, and the wider community.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the District Environmental Officer for the Kumbungu District Assembly, Peter Adda commended HOPin Academy and the Grundfos Foundation for their contribution towards improving sanitation in the district's health and educational facilities.

He called for similar interventions in other schools across the district to ensure that pupils have access to decent and hygienic toilet facilities. Mr. Adda also urged landlords to provide toilet facilities for their tenants to help eliminate open defecation.

Assistant Headmaster of Kumbungu Senior High School, Simon Agongo, expressed gratitude to the partners for the facility, stressing that it was intended to serve students, traders, and health workers and not for general household use.

He appealed to community members to maintain cleanliness around the facilities and practice good hygiene to ensure their long-term sustainability.

The Head of the Kumbungu Sub-District Health Centre, Madam Moro Jutta, described the project as timely, noting that it would significantly ease challenges faced by patients and healthcare workers due to the previous lack of adequate sanitation facilities.

She assured the donors that the facility would be properly maintained to ensure it continues to serve the community for many years.

The Global Business Acceleration Lead for Water Access and Sustainability at the Grundfos Foundation, Leon Roland Elongue Akame, reaffirmed the Foundation's commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives in underserved communities.

According to him, the Foundation is pleased to partner with HOPin Academy to address sanitation challenges in schools and communities as part of efforts to promote national development.

Founder and Executive Director of HOPin Academy, MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy, reiterated the organisation's commitment to empowering communities through education, health, skills development, and sustainability-focused interventions.

He stated that access to basic sanitation is a fundamental human right that promotes health, dignity, and social progress.

Mr. Mac-Gbathy explained that with support from the Grundfos Foundation and local partners, including Fix That Pump, the organisation has implemented several projects under its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme aimed at building healthier and more resilient communities.

He noted that poor sanitation contributes to preventable diseases and negatively affects education, particularly among girls and mothers.

"By providing these facilities, we are not only addressing immediate health concerns but also investing in the future of our youth, mothers, children and the healthcare system," he emphasised.
