AMA, KoKMA Give CMB Roadside Traders Until January 31 to Relocate
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) have directed roadside traders operating around the CMB Market in Accra to relocate behind newly designated demarcation lines by January 31, 2026, warning that enforcement operations will commence in the early hours of February 1.

The directive followed a meeting with the Container Owners Association and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at the CMB Market on Monday. The engagement, requested by the traders, sought additional time to regularise trading activities and discussed support measures including structured trader groupings, the appointment of recognised leaders, and improved waste management through the provision of rubbish containers.
Addressing the traders, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, emphasised the critical role of women in the development of the capital and called on market women and traders to collaborate with city authorities to keep Accra clean, orderly and safe.
He appealed for cooperation to enhance sanitation, improve pedestrian movement and restore vehicular access in the area, which has experienced intensified street trading during the Christmas season.
According to him, the government’s priority is to prevent disease outbreaks and accidents while ensuring that traders are able to earn a living to support their families. He acknowledged that street trading is often driven by economic hardship and the high cost of shop space, noting that new market and shop projects are being planned with affordability in mind, with some spaces expected to cost as low as GH¢500.
Hon. Allotey explained that although authorities initially planned to relocate traders by mid-January, the deadline was extended after traders indicated they still had unsold festive goods. He said the traders have now been granted the full month of January to complete sales and prepare to move, adding that demarcation lines would be redrawn to clearly indicate approved trading areas.
