Three regions the Upper East, Upper West and North East have all recorded zero by way of the newly posted doctors reporting to their facilities. The Ministry of Health posted 35, 32, and 19 doctors respectively to these regions but as of last Friday, November 28, 2025, none reported to their facilities.

The sector minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh who obviously was distraught about the development appeal to the doctors to accept their postings as a “call to duty” stating that it is a new policy aimed at addressing inequities in Ghana's health workforce.

"I wish to state that the government's policy to send medical doctors into the districts should not be misconstrued or be seen as punishment. It should be seen as an equitable distribution of our health force; and we're posting our medical doctors where they are needed most."

The Minister who gave the doctors additional week to report at their facilities said changes would not be effected to the postings. "Unfortunately, there is no way we're going to change anything here; unfortunately, and so we'll give them one whole week to report to their various facilities."

Though other regions recorded some acceptance rate, the situation is generally not encouraging for a professional category that has been on the neck of government to employ them.

Mr Akandoh addressing the press in parliament on Tuesday, said his Ministry is engaging relevant stakeholders including chiefs, District Chief Executives, Members of Parliament to address some bottlenecks to make their stay in their places of posting convenient including finding them accommodation.

BACKGROUND

The Ministry of Health is employing more than 700 medical doctors across the country as part of a new policy aimed at addressing inequities in Ghana’s health workforce.

The targeted areas according to the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, are areas where their services are most needed, particularly district-level facilities outside the Greater Accra Region.
