The celebration was under the theme “the role of the community in accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crises” and highlighting the Sustainable Development Goal 6 which exists to ensure access to water and sanitation.

The commemoration comprised a radio conversation, a clean-up exercise at Apo Beach with support of the Shama District Assembly, Abuesi Methodist Basic A School, community members, and Ecozoil Limited and ended with a Community Durbar and Quiz competition.

Speaking on behalf of FoN’s Executive Director, William Dankyi, a project officer of FoN reminded the gathering that marine litter and its detrimental effects on water quality and quantity for both marine life and human consumption constitutes one of the most widespread and pervasive pollution challenges facing marine ecosystems and livelihood of coastal communities.

He therefore called for accelerated actions to prevent water pollution and marine littering.

The multi-sectoral Marine Litter Network (MalNet), the first West African functional multi-stakeholder network is contributing to accelerating scientific research in marine litter and coastal degradation networking between the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), University of Cape Coast, Ghana and four other African Higher Education of Centres of Excellence (ACE), Government Agencies (in Ghana & Benin) and Development Institute and FoN (all in Ghana).
