The election, which was keenly contested, saw Mr. Paul Sackitey emerge as the leading candidate in both rounds but fall short of the threshold required for election.

In the first round of voting, Mr. Paul Sackitey secured 26 votes, while his contender, Mr. Patrick Siame, obtained nine votes. Three ballots were rejected.

The second round produced a similar outcome, with Mr. Sackitey maintaining his tally of 26 votes, while Mr. Siame increased his vote count to 10. Two ballots were rejected.

Under Section 27 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), a Presiding Member must be elected by at least a two-thirds majority of all Assembly Members. With a total membership of 43, a candidate is required to obtain a minimum of 29 votes to be declared elected.

As neither candidate attained the required threshold, the Assembly was unable to elect a Presiding Member to preside over its proceedings.

In accordance with the provisions of the law, another meeting is expected to be convened within the next 10 days to continue the election process and elect a Presiding Member who will chair the Assembly's deliberations for the next two years.

The inability to elect a Presiding Member means that the Assembly will have to reconvene to seek consensus among members to facilitate the smooth functioning of the local governance system in the district
