According to him, this will ensure equity and timely payment of ex-gratia for Assembly Members who have successfully served their country at the local level.

Mr. Asiedu Adjei, who was speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, expressed his dissatisfaction at the current mode of payment of end-of-service benefits to former assembly members, insisting that the approach breeds discrimination and unfairness in the system.

He added that, while the Local Government Act, Act 936 permits District Assemblies to pay end-of-service benefits on merits of their ability to pay, he believes that the existing system does not create uniformity and therefore must be abolished.

He was however, certain that ensuring paying through the consolidated fund will ensure that members, regardless of one's district, receive equal amounts of ex-gratia, adding that, “just like members of parliament, assembly members must as well receive their ex-gratia through the consolidated fund.”

"Just imagine you serving for four years and at the end of the day your end of benefit is determined by the assembly's ability to pay", he added.

The President also pledged to lobby for introduction of an electoral area project fund, a statutory fund that will cushion assembly members to fund their own projects within their respective electoral areas.
