The beneficiaries, made up of 22 males and 24 females, received items they had earlier applied for through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development. The items distributed included nineteen (19) chest freezers, two (2) refrigerators, an electric sewing machine, plastic chairs, poly tanks, a shoe-making machine, a laptop, and cash donations, all aimed at improving income-generating activities among PWDs.
The initiative was funded through the Assembly’s allocation of 3 percent of its District Assemblies Common Fund, which is reserved for PWD support. The intervention reflects the government’s commitment to implementing the Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on reducing inequalities and promoting decent work.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Raphael Uriel Nartey, announced that the government has augmented the Disability Fund and urged beneficiaries to make effective and productive use of the resources provided. He assured Persons with Disabilities of his administration’s readiness to address their concerns and grievances, advising that such issues should be channeled through their union leaders in line with established procedures.
The Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Richmond Tetteh, encouraged Persons with Disabilities who have not yet registered with the department to do so to ensure 100 percent coverage in future interventions. He further disclosed that officers would be deployed to monitor and evaluate beneficiaries to ensure the items are used for their intended purposes.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Joshua Addy, a Representative of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and a member of the Disability Fund Management Committee, cautioned beneficiaries against diverting or selling the items. He announced that a follow-up assessment would be conducted within a year to evaluate the impact of the support and encouraged PWDs to actively contribute to national development, noting that the sector currently contributes about 7 percent to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Ms. Rebecca Zotorvi expressed heartfelt appreciation to the District Assembly and the Government for the support. She highlighted the economic challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities and commended the initiative, stating that the gesture would significantly improve their livelihoods and enhance their participation in national development.
