The Assembly had earlier handed over the project site to the contractor on May 12, 2026, with the development announced through its official social media platforms the following day. The sod-cutting ceremony marks the official commencement of construction works on the modern market facility.
The 24-Hour Economy Market forms part of the Government's broader agenda to stimulate continuous economic activity, create sustainable employment opportunities, ease congestion in existing markets, and improve trading conditions across the country. Similar markets are expected to be constructed in all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as part of the nationwide initiative.
Representing the Paramount Chief of Asamankese, Osaberima Adu Darko III, the Asamankese Nifahene, Barfour Kwaku Anyan, reaffirmed the Traditional Council's unwavering commitment to the development of the municipality. He urged traders to ensure fairness in the allocation and use of market stalls and cautioned against encroaching on walkways and access roads for trading activities.
Barfour Anyan also encouraged traders to comply with the Assembly's regulations, particularly the payment of market tolls and other statutory levies. He emphasized that internally generated revenue remains a critical source of funding for infrastructure and service delivery within the municipality.
Delivering her address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Paulina Akabila, explained that the facility is designed to support commercial activities around the clock, unlike traditional markets that operate primarily during daytime hours. According to her, the market will provide a secure, modern and business-friendly environment that enables traders to operate safely at any time of the day or night.
She disclosed that the project will feature police and fire service posts to ensure 24-hour security, banking and digital payment facilities to promote cashless transactions, cold storage units to minimize post-harvest losses, restaurants, healthcare facilities and crèches to support traders and their families.
Hon. Akabila noted that although the national implementation framework provides a two-year completion period for the project, the contractor has assured the Assembly that construction will be completed within approximately 18 months.
The ceremony brought together several dignitaries, including the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Moses Kobla Joshua; the Presiding Member, Hon. Abdul Karim Yahuza; traditional authorities; members of the clergy; representatives of Saptco GH Limited; Heads of Departments and Units; Honourable Assembly Members; members of the media; leaders of market women associations; party supporters; and residents of the municipality.
The West Akim Municipal Assembly expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation. It expressed confidence that the successful execution of the project will transform commercial activities in Asamankese, generate employment opportunities, enhance local economic growth and significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the municipality.
