Currently, less than ten percent of roads in the municipality are tarred, a situation the MCE says severely hampers economic activity. This is particularly critical given the area hosts major national assets like the Tema Oil Refinery and several power plants as well as various industries.
In an interview, Mr. Morton revealed that sustained engagement with the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development has accelerated plans. The Assembly has collaborated with the Departments of Urban and Feeder Roads and the Highways Authority, with a clear goal of having at least half of the municipality's roads tarred.
“The government has shown strong commitment, and we now have about five contractors either already on site or finalizing preparations to commence work,” the MCE stated.
Key projects underway or set to begin include:
* Joshob Construction Ltd: Resumed work on the crucial Tema Oil Refinery to Kpone road.
* The GPHA Terminal (Barrier) to Kpone road. This will connect through Prampram to Ningo, providing an alternative to the Aflao Highway.
* Black Hawk: Assigned to the Barrier-Calipso to Micheal Camp Gate road.
* EUGO Terrand Ltd: Working on a comprehensive network from Mkplitsakpo (Saki) Mosque, through the Ministry of Energy Warehouse, behind the VRA, to Bediako and Afienya.
* Skycom: Managing the road from Peace Bee to Shanghai.
Mr. Morton issued a direct appeal to residents and businesses along the affected routes. He urged them to relocate any containers or shops marked for removal to avoid destruction during excavation.
“We are determined to execute this exercise with a human face to prevent property loss,” he assured. “We are also ready to allocate spaces in buffer zones after construction so businesses can be re-established.”
The municipality is poised for a transformative period of infrastructure development aimed at unlocking its full economic potential.
