National Security Engages Media Practitioners on Conflict-Sensitive Reporting in Sunyani

The National Security Secretariat has held an engagement programme with media practitioners in Sunyani, Bono Regional capital to strengthen conflict-sensitive reporting and promote responsible journalism in the coverage of security-related and sensitive issues.

The rationale was to engage managers of leading radio stations and journalists in a structured dialogue that promotes responsible, accurate and peace-sensitive reporting as well as safeguards collective national security while building a voluntary partnership between broadcasters and national security institutions.

The programme brought together journalists, editors, and media managers from across the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions to discuss the critical role of the media in maintaining peace, national cohesion, and public confidence during periods of tension and conflict.

Major-General Tim Bataa-Bana, the Director in charge of National Counter-Terrorism Fusion Centre (NCTFC) of the National Security in his address emphasized the need for accurate, balanced, and ethical reporting, noting that misinformation and sensationalism can exacerbate tensions and undermine peace-building efforts. He encouraged journalists to verify information thoroughly and avoid content that could inflame divisions within communities.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the media in addressing emerging security challenges. Participants were taken through best practices in conflict-sensitive reporting, including the responsible use of language, fact-checking, and the protection of vulnerable sources.

The media practitioners welcomed the initiative and described it as timely and beneficial in enhancing their understanding of security-related reporting. They expressed their commitment to upholding professional standards and contributing to peace and stability through responsible journalism.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by National Security to foster stronger partnerships with the media and promote informed reporting that supports national development and social harmony.

Major-General Tim Bataa-Bana assured the media that Regional Verification Liaison Mechanism will be established with agreed Verification Protocol through which broadcasters could verify sensitive information with designated NSCS contacts before broadcast as well as feedback

channel for media practitioners to report threats, institutions or challenges they face in covering conflicts to enabling security agencies to better protect journalists.
