MMDCEs should not be at the behest of the president - South Tongu MP

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) should not necessarily be at the behest of the president of the Republic of Ghana, Member of Parliament for South Tongu Kwame Maxwell Lukutor has said in an interview.

According to him it should not be said tomorrow that if an MMDCE does not smile with an official at the presidency he or she is changed; rather the person should be in office by merit, hence the need for elections.

“So that, Chief Executives’ tenure would be secured like we have that of the Member of Parliament. I have been sworn in office for the next four years, the MMDCEs should be assured of their tenure too so that they can relax to play their role very well”.

Again, it helps the MMDCEs to take stands on issues that will benefit their people; they do not play to the gallery and to the pleasure of those who appointed them and other power brokers.

Mr. Lukutor was however quick to add that the election should be in a manner that it will not go to disadvantage the presidency at the same time. “Can you imagine that you have President John Mahama as President and an elephant person as MCE?” He queried.

The idea is that ones the president comes to any Assembly, he is the guest of the MMDCE. “And can you also imagine how an umbrella MMDCE is going to receive an elephant president?” those are some of the things we need to look at”.

Like I have in my district now, ten people have shown interest in the chief Executive position and have gone through the vetting process with three shortlisted for appointment. So by election, these three would have been subjected to election by the constituents.

“Then we are good to go and they will be more accountable to their people, so that they do not play to the pressure of the Regional Minister and President who appointed them”, he affirmed.
