Jamestown Landfill Evacuation Underway

The long-awaited evacuation of the Jamestown Landfill is steadily underway not only to get rid of the wastes, but to also pave way for redevelopment of the area.

The exercise officially begun, with President John Dramani Mahama on the ground on Friday, September 18, 2026, to flag off the historic exercise.

The commencement of the waste evacuation marks a significant milestone in the government’s broader agenda to reclaim and restore the coastal landscape of the Greater Accra Region.

The Jamestown dumpsite, which has served as a major waste receptacle for the capital for decades, has long been a source of environmental and health concerns for residents of the historic coastal community.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to Sanitation and environmental sustainability, describing the exercise as a crucial step toward restoring the dignity of the Jamestown community and mitigating the impact of climate change on the coastline.

The evacuation process is expected to span several months, during which thousands of tons of legacy waste will be excavated and properly disposed of or recycled. The government has indicated that the reclaimed land will be repurposed to boost tourism and local economic activity in the area.

Local leaders and residents who witnessed the flag-off expressed optimism, stating that the exercise would bring relief to a community that has suffered from the detrimental effects of the landfill for generations.

The event was attended by various government officials, environmental stakeholders, and traditional authorities who praised the President for fulfilling a key campaign promise to tackle the nation’s sanitation crisis.
