Kwahu A P N : 22-Seater Fibre Boat Commissioned to Take NHIS Services to Island Communities

Residents in the island communities of the Kwahu Afram Plains North District are set to enjoy easier access to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services following the commissioning of a new 22-seater fibre boat.

The boat was commissioned at Zikpo Nyuinyui by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, as part of efforts to bridge geographical barriers and bring essential health insurance services closer to residents in hard-to-reach communities.

The intervention is expected to significantly improve NHIS outreach to communities including Dwarf Island, Digya Island and Dodi Island, enabling officials to travel to the areas to provide registration, renewal and other essential services.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mrs. Awatey noted that the Volta Lake had for years posed a major challenge to residents seeking access to NHIS services, particularly those living on the islands.

According to her, the provision of the boat would help remove the transportation barrier and enable NHIS officials to reach island communities more efficiently and regularly.

She said the initiative formed part of broader efforts by the Government to expand access to healthcare and ensure that geographical location did not prevent citizens from benefiting from essential health services.

The Regional Minister further linked the intervention to the Government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access, including the Free Primary Healthcare initiative, stressing the need to ensure that vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities were not left behind.

The 22-seater fibre boat is therefore expected to become an important logistical asset for NHIS outreach in the district, helping to strengthen registration and renewal activities while bringing health insurance services directly to residents across the lake.

The intervention marks another significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility in Kwahu Afram Plains North and ensuring that living on an island does not mean being cut off from essential public services.
