The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has called for a thorough police investigation after billboards highlighting the struggles of cocoa farmers and celebrating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were allegedly torn down on the orders of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked political tension in the cocoa-rich constituency, with the MP accusing the MCE of trying to suppress local dissent regarding the government’s recent cocoa pricing decisions.

Speaking exclusively to the media, the MP detailed the sequence of events, explaining that the billboards were erected to give a voice to local cocoa farmers who are reeling from a reduction in producer prices. “Cocoa farmers, echoing their displeasure on the price reduction, contacted me. Because Akim Oda is a major cocoa-growing area, they wanted us to mount billboards to echo the woes of the cocoa farmer in this vicinity. So I agreed, and we mounted about two of them,” the MP stated. He emphasized that the structures were lawfully erected, noting, “These are billboards that I own myself, but I have paid every rent I need to pay to the assembly for 2024.”

The situation escalated yesterday afternoon when the MP received reports of young men climbing and vandalizing the signage. The matter was immediately reported to the police.

According to the MP, the individuals apprehended by the police have made startling admissions regarding their orders. “We reported it to the police, and I am told that they were invited to the police station this afternoon. In their statement, they admitted that it was the Municipal Chief Executive, Solomon Kusi Brako, who asked them to remove those billboards,” Acquah revealed.

The Akim Oda legislator interpreted the MCE’s alleged actions as a politically motivated attempt to hide the government’s record from the electorate. “I can sense some political issues out of this. Perhaps because he belongs to a government that has created this haircut for cocoa farmers, he thinks that the people of Akim Oda do not have to know about it. But that is a bit funny, because every cocoa farmer knows exactly what has happened,” he said. He contrasted the situation in his constituency with the rest of the country, questioning, “If in Accra, where we don’t grow cocoa, we have billboards that have not been tampered with, why in Akim Oda, a place renowned for cocoa growing, should a political appointee attempt to tear them down?”

In a further twist, the MP alleged that the MCE’s actions extend beyond the farmers' billboards to those celebrating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer. “This afternoon, I was told that another billboard that seeks to congratulate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his success in the past election—he has gone to move it and has placed the billboard in the office of the assembly,” Acquah claimed.

The MP did not hesitate to link the incident to the MCE’s recent controversies regarding illegal mining. “You remember that this is the same MCE who is engulfed in this galamsey issue, having given receipts illegally to galamseyers as a form of a fine and publicly admitting it. It is equally safe to say that perhaps he is one of those who want to see the extinction of the cocoa industry in lieu of the galamsey business that this government seems to be interested in,” he asserted.

Despite the provocation, the MP has called for calm among his supporters in the NPP stronghold while the legal process unfolds. “I have to restrain my supporters in Akim Oda. Akim Oda is a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party. I have restrained the boys because the police have taken it over. But it is important to let the media know so that we can follow the story and see to it that it is a crime to deface a public notice, which we have received permits for,” he concluded. As of press time, the Municipal Chief Executive has not issued an official response to the allegations, and police investigations are ongoing.
