Led by Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, District Chief Executive, Superintendent Charles Addai Boateng, District Police Commander, and Mr. Richmond Addai Marfo, District NADMO Coordinator, the task force arrested four individuals engaged in illegal mining and destroyed their equipment, including chanfan and water pumping machines.
The operation aimed to safeguard the River Pra, a vital water source serving thousands of people, from the devastating effects of illegal mining. The council recognizes the severity of the issue and is committed to eradicating galamsey activities in the district.
The DCE emphasized the government's dedication to combating illegal mining but stressed the need for a collective effort to achieve success. He highlighted the logistical challenges facing the district assembly, including the lack of life jackets and speed boats to pursue illegal miners on river bodies.
He appealed to all Ghanaians, particularly those dependent on River Pra, to join the fight against galamsey. He emphasized that the battle requires a collaborative approach, transcending political affiliations and geographical boundaries.
Mr. Richmond Addai Marfo, the NADMO Coordinator, attributed frequent flooding in the district to galamsey activities along riverbanks and in residential areas. He underscored the importance of addressing the issue to prevent further environmental degradation and ensure public safety.
The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Security Council's initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to combating illegal mining. However, sustained support from all stakeholders is crucial to achieving lasting success in the fight against galamsey.
