The day is instituted by the United Nations (UN) in 1974 is celebrated on June 5 every year to promote awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The institutionalization of the day which has since become the UN’s flagship platform for campaigning on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime had as its theme for the 2024 celebration “Accelerating Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”.

Shape Attitude Ghana, a non-Governmental Organization which organized the event also used the day to mark its 10th anniversary with speakers drawn from institutions including the University of Education Winneba and the Ghana Education Service.

Addressing participants at the event, the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, in a speech read on his behalf noted that environmental issues were fundamental to the survival of humans and the communities in which they reside.

According to him the Municipality like many others around the world was faced with a profound challenge of environmental degradation, climate change and resource scarcity which threaten not only the ecosystems but the livelihoods, food security and future prosperity.

Mr. Kassim noted that land restoration was a pressing need in the Municipality owing to the fact that degradation of the lands caused by various factors such as deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices and urbanization posed a threat to the environment in the area. He posited that accelerating land restoration and building resilience against desertification and drought meant investing in the future of the community and generations to come.

The Effutu Mayor intimated that it was imperative for a serious action to restore the lands to its former glory to ensure the continuous sustenance of the current and future generations. He appealed to all residents of Effutu and beyond to come together and commit to the protection and the restoration of the lands in the area, adding that the health of the lands in Effutu was inseparably linked to the well-being of the people.

“Together we can create a future where our land thrives, our environment is resilient and our community prospers”.
