Minister commends China-Aid, UNICEF

The North East Regional Minister Yidana Zakaria has commissioned a NEWBORN CARE UNIT at Binde Hospital in the Bunkprugu Nakpaduri District of the North East Region.

The state-of-the-art facility was engineered by the Ghana Health Service with support from UNICEF and funded by China –Aid.

The Minister commended the CHINA-AID and UNICEF team for the immense support to address the health and nutrition challenges in the region since the beginning of the year.

To him, it’s important to note that before the establishment of these New born Care Units, all the four major hospitals in the region have been referring new born babies with Health problems such as Birth Asphyxia, Neonatal Jaundice, Neonatal Sepsis, Preterm Babies, Babies with low birth weight and others to the Tamale Teaching Hospital which is about 3 to 4 hours journey from Nalerigu the North East Regional Capital.

As a result of these challenges associated with travelling to Tamale coupled with other difficulties, most mothers are reluctant to go resulting in undesirable outcomes for these new born babies.

The new facility is expected to accommodate and ensure the safety of newly born babies within the region.

Inaugurating the facility, the Minister commended China- Aid/UNICEF Ghana and Ghana Health Service for the Hospital with this modern edifice Newborn Care Unit and appealed to them to take good care of the facility.

He also appealed to UNICEF Ghana and other Non-Governmental organizations to support more of these life-saving facilities to other health facilities within the Region.
