GALAMSEY: GUNA adds voice for urgent action to save environment, public health

The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) has called for urgent need for concerted action to protect our environment, public health, and the future of our communities in the wake of the worsening illegal mining (Galamsey) activities in the country.

The Association in a release dated September 12, 2024 expressed grave concern over the escalating environmental degradation caused by the pervasive and destructive activities of illegal mining, in the country.

“Galamsey” activities have become a significant threat to Ghana's environment, economy, and public health. Despite numerous efforts by the government, civil society, and environmental advocates, illegal mining continues to ravage our lands, contaminate our water bodies, and jeopardize the livelihoods of countless Ghanaians”.

The Association which also identified the negative effects of these illegal mining activities to include:

• Severe Land Degradation;

• Water Pollution;

• Deforestation;

• Public Health Hazards;

• Harmful Economic Impact; also calls on all stakeholders, including the government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society, and the private sector, to take urgent and coordinated action to address this crisis.

GUNA thus admonished that the following measures be taken including;

• Strengthening Law Enforcement

• Promote Sustainable Mining Practices

• Community Engagement and Education

• Restore Degraded Lands and

• International Support and Partnerships
