This was confirmed on Wednesday during an inspection tour by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo, to assess the functionality of the lighting system along major routes in the metropolis and its sister assemblies after repairs.
Addressing the media after the inspection of lights within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Minister said that although 70% of the target had been met, it did not mean that work would slow down.
The Minister, accompanied by the Chief Director for the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), Mrs Lilian Baeka and the Coordinating Director of AMA, Mr. Douglas N.K Annoful, emphasised the need to complete the project, adding that some of the streetlight installations were still ongoing.
She explained that certain roads in the region were under construction, making installing streetlights in those areas impossible until the roads were officially handed over.
She assured that once the road works were completed, the necessary lighting infrastructure would be put in place while expressing gratitude to all stakeholders for their support and involvement in the project.
Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, ahead of the inspection, The Greater Accra Regional Minister reported significant progress in the implementation of the initiative to restore street lighting across major roads and streets in the region.
She emphasised that the initiative, which aimed to ensure that 70% of streetlights were fixed and fully operational within her first 50 days in office, aligned with the President’s reset agenda to improve visibility and enhance security.
She stated that a total of 126 streets had been worked on, covering highways, town roads, and community roads across the region, adding that the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road had not been included in the project due to ongoing construction works.
She mentioned that maintenance works on portions of the N1 (Tetteh Quarshie to Kasoa), N6 (Achimota to Amasaman), and N4 (Shiashie to Oyibi) were being undertaken by the Ghana Highways Authority, with contractors currently on site.
