Fishers Welfare Scheme Launched in Shama to Improve Livelihoods
Date Created : 10/4/2025 : Story Author : Irene Danso/Ghanadistricts.com
The initiative, launched on October 4, 2025, is aimed at addressing some of the challenges confronting artisanal fishers and improving their livelihoods.
The scheme brings together stakeholders in the fisheries sector to provide support and promote the welfare of people whose livelihoods depend on fishing and related activities. The launch forms part of efforts to improve the conditions of fisherfolk while encouraging sustainable practices within the artisanal fisheries sector.
Stakeholders at the event emphasised the importance of strengthening welfare programmes for fishing communities, particularly as fishers face challenges associated with their occupation and changing conditions within the fisheries sector.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to improved social protection for fisherfolk and promote greater collaboration among canoe owners, fishers, government agencies and other stakeholders.
The organisers called for continued cooperation from fishing communities to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme and maximise its benefits.
The launch at Apo Bakano underscores the importance of the fishing sector to the local economy of Shama, where several coastal communities depend on fishing and related activities for their livelihoods.
The Fishers Welfare Scheme is therefore expected to provide an additional platform for addressing the welfare needs of fisherfolk while supporting the development of the local fisheries sector.
