AMA intensifies clean-up at Avenor following Accra flooding

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified its clean-up campaign in the Avenor Electoral Area by clearing debris and desilting drains following last Monday's torrential rainfall, which triggered severe flooding across parts of the community.

The heavy downpour left a trail of destruction, with several homes and businesses submerged. Many residents are still assessing the extent of damage to their properties and livelihoods after floodwaters swept through the area, destroying household items, merchandise, and other valuables.

In response to the disaster and as part of measures to prevent a recurrence, the AMA has deployed personnel and heavy-duty equipment to undertake extensive desilting of gutters and the removal of refuse and debris obstructing drainage channels.

The exercise forms part of the Assembly's broader flood mitigation strategy aimed at improving the free flow of stormwater during the rainy season.

Speaking to GhanaDistricts.com during an inspection of the exercise, the Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, Alfred Nii Agyei, popularly known as Paa Joe, disclosed that more than 45 tipper truckloads of debris, silt, and solid waste have so far been removed from drains and other flood-prone locations within the community.

According to him, the exercise is expected to significantly improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding in future rainstorms.

He noted that while the Assembly remains committed to maintaining a clean environment, the cooperation of residents is equally essential to sustaining the gains made through the clean-up operation.

Paa Joe therefore appealed to residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and desist from dumping refuse into drains and waterways, which he described as one of the major causes of flooding in the area.

He stressed that behavioural change is critical in addressing the perennial flooding challenge, urging community members to take ownership of their environment by participating in communal clean-up exercises and ensuring that gutters around their homes and businesses remain free of waste.

Residents who witnessed the clean-up exercise welcomed the intervention and expressed hope that the sustained desilting and waste collection efforts would help minimize flooding and protect lives and property during subsequent heavy rains.
