The health talk was delivered by Madam Felicia Konadu of the Sunyani Municipal Health Directorate at a durbar held at the forecourt of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly.

The durbar brought together 58 PWDs from across the municipality, primarily to distribute support items to beneficiaries. It also served as an opportunity to educate them on healthy lifestyle practices to prevent kidney-related complications.

Speaking at the gathering, Madam Konadu explained the functions of the kidney, common causes of kidney disease—including uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, excessive use of painkillers and dehydration—and early warning signs such as swelling of the feet and face, changes in urination and persistent fatigue.

She advised the PWDs to reduce salt intake, drink enough water, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and self-medication, especially with non-prescribed painkillers, and to undergo regular medical check-ups. She stressed that persons with disabilities are equally at risk of kidney disease and must prioritise their health despite mobility challenges.

Officials of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs, noting that the distribution of items formed part of the Assembly’s support under the Persons with Disability Common Fund.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Assembly for the support and the health education, describing it as timely.

The durbar ended with the distribution of items to the 58 PWDs.
