Keta Lagoon Dredging Underway to Ease Flooding and Improve Water Flow

The Keta Municipal Assembly led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Wisdom Seade have commenced dredging works to create a channel from the Keta Lagoon into the Atlantic Ocean as part of efforts to reduce rising water levels and protect flood-prone communities across the Keta coastal enclave.

The intervention involves opening the lagoon's outlet and removing accumulated silt to allow excess water to flow freely into the sea. The exercise is expected to lower the lagoon's water level, following weeks of heavy rainfall that left several communities inundated.

Residents of Keta, Kedzi, Havedzi, Horvi, Vodza and surrounding areas have experienced flooding that damaged homes, farmlands and public infrastructure, prompting calls for urgent government action. Community members had earlier appealed for the opening of the Havedzi floodgate and dredging of the lagoon, arguing that years of siltation had significantly reduced the lagoon's capacity to contain floodwaters.

Engineers overseeing the operation say the dredging and opening of the lagoon's outlet will restore the natural flow of water from the lagoon into the sea, helping to minimise the risk of further flooding. The exercise forms part of broader flood management measures aimed at safeguarding lives, property and livelihoods in the affected communities.
