Upper East Regional Minister Hands Over 17,250 Exercise Books to GES for Needy Schools

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has handed over 17,250 exercise books to the Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to support needy and less-privileged schools across the Upper East Region.

The exercise books were donated to the region by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) as part of efforts to provide essential learning materials to pupils, particularly those in underserved communities.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga described the donation as a significant intervention, noting that the inability of parents and guardians to provide basic learning materials could sometimes prevent children from attending school.

According to the Regional Minister, some pupils from poor households have had to stay away from school because their parents or guardians could not afford to purchase exercise books and other essential materials.

He stressed that although an exercise book might appear insignificant, its absence could become a serious barrier to education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Hon. Atanga therefore pledged to closely monitor the distribution of the donated books to ensure that they reach the intended beneficiary schools and pupils.

He expressed concern about situations where educational materials donated to support needy children remain in storage facilities instead of being distributed to those who require them.

The Minister said he would ensure that the exercise books were moved from the regional stores to schools where the need was greatest, ultimately placing them in the hands of pupils to support their academic work.

Hon. Atanga expressed appreciation to NALAG for the donation and emphasised the importance of continued support for children from disadvantaged communities to enable them to remain in school and participate effectively in teaching and learning.

He noted that providing basic educational materials was essential to creating an equitable learning environment and ensuring that financial challenges did not prevent children from accessing education.

The intervention is expected to complement ongoing efforts by the Regional Coordinating Council and the Ghana Education Service to improve educational outcomes and reduce barriers to learning among pupils across the Upper East Region.
