Ga South Assembly Commences Dredging Works at Ashalaja to Tackle Flooding

The Ga South Municipal Assembly has commenced dredging works at Ashalaja as part of measures to address the persistent flooding challenges affecting residents in the area.

The exercise is focused on removing accumulated silt, weeds, refuse and other obstructions from drainage channels to improve the free flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Moses Kabu Kubi Ocansey, said the intervention forms part of the Government’s broader Post-Flood Mitigation Programme, being coordinated through the Hydrological Services Department Ghana, to restore waterways and drainage channels across Accra following the devastating floods of June 29.

According to the MCE, the dredging exercise is intended to improve the capacity of the drainage network and help protect residents, properties and livelihoods from the devastating effects of flooding.

He called on residents to support the Assembly’s efforts by keeping their surroundings clean and refraining from dumping refuse into drains, gutters and waterways.

He cautioned that indiscriminate disposal of waste can obstruct water channels, reduce the free flow of stormwater and worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.

The Ga South Municipal Assembly has assured residents that it will continue to identify and address critical drainage challenges across communities in the Municipality as part of efforts to strengthen flood prevention and improve public safety.

The Assembly further appealed to residents and other stakeholders to collaborate with authorities in maintaining clean and functional drainage systems to ensure the long-term success of flood mitigation measures in the Municipality.
