GA E: Assembly relocates ‘satellite market’ traders to permanent site

Some traders at the recently opened Kwabenya Searchlight market in the Ga East Municipality have been relocated to ‘Wonder Junction’, an area earmarked by the Assembly to serve as a permanent market place for traders in the area.

These market men and women, who trade mostly in foodstuffs, were earlier this year relocated from the Dome market, as part of efforts by the Ga East Assembly to ensure social distancing and further reduce the risk of contracting the deadly coronavirus due to overcrowding.

However, in less than three months, these traders have been relocated again from their current market at the Kwabenya school park to a permanent market place.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, Assembly member for Kwabenya Electoral Area, Mr. Bright Paul Mintah described the relocation as a step in the right direction by assembly as “we prepare to welcome our children back to school”.

He wondered how the school pupils could concentrate on their studies if buying and selling is allowed to continue on the school park. He insisted that the new market could therefore serve as an ideal place to be used as a permanent market place.

“This new site is own by the Atomic Energy Commission and is going to better serve as a permanent market for the good people of Dome – Kwabenya”, he added.

Meanwhile, some traders were busily struggling to get spots to sell their products when Ghanadistricts.com visited the new market.

In his reaction to that, the Mintah noted that plans were being put in place to ensure that every trader gets a spot to sell his/her product or food stuffs.

He therefore called on all traders to exercise patience since the assembly was still liaising with all relevant stakeholders to get each and every trader a permanent spot.

Some traders who spoke to our correspondents also seized the opportunity to express their gratitude to the assembly and the government for listening to their plea.
