The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, disclosed this during the commencement of the installation of 150 waste bins at strategic locations across the municipality to address indiscriminate dumping.
She said the Assembly was working towards securing its own waste disposal facility to complement existing arrangements but did not provide a specific timeline for its establishment.
Currently, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly shares the management of the Ahansonyewodia disposal site, located in the Obuasi East Municipality, with the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly and the Akrofuom District Assembly..jpg)
Hon. Appiah Kannin expressed concern about the sanitation challenges facing the municipality, noting that the installation of the waste bins formed part of broader efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and restore Obuasi’s reputation as one of the cleanest municipalities in the country.
She urged Assembly Members to take ownership of the initiative by collaborating with their respective committees and relevant stakeholders to ensure the regular emptying and proper maintenance of the bins.
The MCE warned that persons caught engaging in indiscriminate dumping would be sanctioned in accordance with the Assembly’s bye-laws, with offenders liable to fines of not less than GH¢500.
The Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Simon Agamgaba, explained that the waste bins would be secured behind metal poles and fitted with padlocks to prevent misuse.
He said the containers were intended for small quantities of waste generated by members of the public and were not designed to accommodate household or bulk domestic waste.
Mr. Agamgaba cautioned residents against depositing household waste in the bins, warning that offenders would be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.
