Assembly Resumes Work on Abandoned 25-Bed Maternity Block

The facility is nearing completion and is expected to improve maternal healthcare delivery and ease pressure on the hospital's existing maternity ward, which has a capacity of only nine beds.

The Western North Regional Minister, Mr Wilbert Petty Brentum, inspected the facility during a tour of ongoing development projects in the municipality on October 1, 2026. He commended the Municipal Assembly, its technical team and the contractor for efforts to complete the long-delayed project. He also urged the contractor to accelerate the remaining works to enable the facility to be commissioned and put to use.

Mr Brentum described the maternity block as a modern healthcare facility with the capacity to serve the needs of expectant mothers in the municipality and surrounding communities.

Speaking on behalf of the hospital, Nurse Manager Vera Esson Nyarko explained that the existing nine-bed maternity ward was inadequate for the number of pregnant women seeking delivery services at the facility. She expressed optimism that the new 25-bed block would provide additional space, improve patient comfort and enable healthcare professionals to deliver better maternal services.

The contractor gave an assurance that the outstanding works would be completed within a month, paving the way for the facility's commissioning.

The project forms part of efforts by the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly to complete stalled development projects and improve access to essential social services.

When completed and operational, the maternity block is expected to strengthen maternal healthcare delivery and provide improved conditions for mothers and their babies in the municipality and neighbouring communities.
