Gyampong was born on 22 December 1950. He attended the Kejebi Secondary School and obtained his GCE Ordinary Level and the Kpando Secondary School and obtained his GCE Advanced Level. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Cape Coast.

He had his national service at Kedjebi Secondary School after the National service he had the opportunity to teach at Mawuli and Kedjebi Secondary Schools in the Volta Region.

Mr. John Kwadwo Gyapong is a Business Executive and former Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency. In 1991 he had the privilege to represent farmers in the Volta Region at the Consultative Assembly.

He was the Member of Parliament for Akan from 1993 to 2009. He served as the Regional Chairman for NDC in Oti Region, a position he held till his appointment as the Regional Minister for Oti. He is married with ten children
