Mr. Adjei Sowah said this is an improvement from 2015 when over a hundred people died from the disease in Accra alone.

“In 2015, we had problems of evacuating the waste in the city of Accra for two days. By the third day there was a cholera outbreak. It affected over 20,000 people [and], 200 people died. As I speak to you now, in 2017 and 2018, we have recorded a significant improvement due to what we have done,” he added.

Mr Adjei Sowah made the remark on The Point of View on Citi TV, hosted by Bernard Avle on Monday.

There a number refuse heaps in various parts of Accra as refuse collectors often do not come for them.

The situation is worsened by the poor waste management by Ghanaians some of whom dump their rubbish in drains and on the street.

The AMA boss attributed the delay in collecting refuse in Accra on the challenges waste management companies face in accessing landfill sites.

The AMA explained that the Nsumia waste disposal site located within the Nsawam-Adoagyiri municipality has been closed down while the one in Kpone has also “not been in full operation since Saturday, 14th April 2018.”

“In view of this, all refuse trucks directed to Kpone disposal site are experiencing abnormally long queues. The situation has been compounded by the reduction in the already short eight-hour operational period and also not working on Sundays,” the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah noted.

AMA, however, appealed to managers of the Kpone landfill to as a matter of urgency resume its 24-hour operation to enable the filth in Accra to be cleared.
