KETA: Elizabeth Afoley honoured; installed development queen
The chiefs and people of Dzelukope in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have recognized the rise and tenacity to duty of one of their daughters, Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye and honoured her by installing her the development queen of the area.

Honourable Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and also the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency in the Greater Accra Region hail partly from the Keta Municipality and her current position made her the first female from Dzelukope to have been appointed a minister by any government.

At a durbar held in her honour at Gobah Beach, Dzelukope – Keta, Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye was enstooled development queen with stool name Mama Dunenyo I.

The event saw the assembling of a number of chiefs from the area including the Paramount chief of the Anlo Traditional Area, Togui Sri III, who graced the occasion and attested to the importance and the pride she has brought to the people.



The people of Dzelukope and Keta for that matter have fishing as their main economic activity, both marine and inland; and to have one of their own as the minister in charge of fisheries give them hope that they would be best served to improve their lot.

Addressing the gathering, Torgbui Sri III, noted that the dwindling fishing stock due to illegal fishing practices was impacting negatively on the lives of the people and called for more proactive measures in dealing with the situation to avert further destruction to the fishing industry.

He also commended the President, Nana Akufo Addo for the confidence reposed in their daughter and making her a minister in charge of such an important ministry as the Fisheries Ministry that a lot of Ghanaians particularly those along the coast and others inland fishers.

He hopes the minister resolve to bring significant improvement to the sector would be achieved for the larger benefit of the fisher folks.



Torgui Sri also made a passionate appeal to the Minister to lead their quest to have the lagoon dredged to improve their inland fishing activities and reduce flooding. This he noted, will help reduce sand winning activities at the beaches that encourages sea erosion.

Chief of Dzelukope, Togbui Gatsiko VI also noted that, as the development chief, Mama Dunenyo should assist them in improving their roads particularly Goaba Beach road, Beach Hotel road, and Ghanakpedzi road. Additionally, it is their hope that the municipality will benebit from government flagship programmes, particularly the one district, one factory policy to help bring more employment to the youth.



The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa who also graced the occasion assured the chiefs and people that the department of urban roads will be tasked to work on the roads listed adding that not much was done last year on roads but the story will be different this year.



Meanwhile, Mama Dunenyo assured the chiefs and people of her commitment to play her role to their delight, adding that the dredging of the Keta Lagoon remains one of her top priorities and she will do her best to have it done.
