Zoomlion Ghana Limited continues to support district assemblies to support communities living close to the Volta Lake and travel mostly across the lake.

District Chief Executive for Krachi East, Rapheal Kofi Ogyemoko told Ghanadistricts.com that the assembly has just taken delivery of some 700 pieces of life-jackets from Zoomlion for distribution to some selected communities along the lake.

Krachi East District is one of the areas where high numbers of boat disasters have occurred. Only two weeks ago, some four persons were reported to have lost their lives in a boat disaster when they were travelling across the lake. This of course is a regular feature on the lake due mainly to refusal of travelers to wear live jackets. Initially, the complain was that there were no live jackets but when stakeholders started supplying the jackets residents refused to use them, and people continue to die on the lake.

It is not clear why residents refused to use the jackets as indicated by the DCE, but the District Security Committee (DISEC) hopes to find solution to their refusal by intensifying education, and adopting other measures if possible, which may include sanctioning boats that do not make it available for passengers.
